PTX Gold Firefly
Inspired from the old Russian formula "Pirotex" gold "glitter" formula, and made to work as a gold firefly with Skylighter's special atomized aluminum grade 35-45 micron CH0185.

Sodium Nitrate..............43%
Charcoal, Airfloat..........36%
Sulfur.............................6%
Aluminum CH0185........9%
Dextrin...........................6%

Effect: Long hanging gold spark tail with delayed gold flashes in the tail. Use in shells, rocket headers, comets, etc.

Prep: Mill everything except the aluminum together for 1 hour.  Split the milled batch into two parts:

10% of the milled mix for pumping (with NO metal added)
90% of the milled mix for pumping (WITH metal added)

Now add the required metal to the 90% baggie and mix it up dry.  Add the remaining 10% comp to another zipper baggie.  Dampen both portions of star comps with +8% water by weight with respect to comp (don't need boric acid or anything else like that, just water).  Mix the baggies by hand really well until they are not dusty inside anymore, and the comp turns into what looks like wet dirt.  Pump in your star plates or comet presses, first adding the comp with metal in it, press comp down a little in each hole, scrape edges clean of any metal, then top with NO METAL damp comp to use as pusher layer (this thin layer catches any aluminum grit so it won't get stuck in the pistons and mess up the aluminum tooling).  Add the top plate or comet piston, press like normal, the stars should come out smooth and dry in a day or two if they are 1/2" stars, longer dry times for bigger stars.

Best to dry these stars in the sun or a drying box. Store stars away from moisture (like in a zipper baggie), use them relatively quickly (within a few months) since they have sodium nitrate in them, which is hygroscopic.  These stars DON'T need any priming.  They light fine on the edges to do their magic.
